HUMANITARIAN AND SERVICE CONTRIBUTIONS
Face the Future Foundation
In addition to his leading roles as a sought-after surgeon, educator and specialty leader, Dr. Adamson participated in his first humanitarian surgical mission overseas in 1994. This was followed in 1996 by his creation of Face the Future Foundation in Canada (originally called the Canadian Foundation for Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) in which he has served as President since its inception. Seed money was provided by a grateful patient, then supported by Dr. Adamson and “friends.” The foundation’s success has been highly dependent upon the personal, organizational and financial commitment of Dr. Adamson. The goal of the Foundation is to treat patients, especially children, with complex head and neck surgical deformities and diseases. These are patients who otherwise would have no access to the care they need. The surgical teams also educate host country surgeons, nurses and other health care providers so they can build capacity and enhance sustainability in their developing and war-torn countries. Much sustainability has now been achieved, for example in Rwanda, where the size of teams has been decreased while the number increased so as to focus on more specialized cases which Rwandan surgeons perform under team supervision. Newer missions are multi-specialty and have up to 20 team members. Face the Future develops partnerships with local Ministries of Health, hospital administrators, other charitable organizations and corporations to increase its capabilities to meet host country needs and establish sustainable programs. Success is also due to the hundreds of surgeons and nurses selected by Dr. Adamson who have loyally contributed their expertise and leadership to the missions of Face the Future Foundation over its 28-year history.
Working through the Foundation, Dr. Adamson has created and developed:
- 20 missions ranging from 3 to 16 members who have traveled since 1996 to the Bonum Center, a pediatric hospital and rehabilitation center in Ekaterinburg, Russia. 92 orphans operated on were subsequently adopted.
- 6 missions of approximately 10 members to Saratov, Russia to its Regional Pediatric Hospital to focus on children with facial deformities, and congenital gastrointestinal and urologic deformities
- 7 surgical missions of 12 members to Ulyanovsk, Russia, to its pediatric hospital to treat children with congenital, traumatic and post-ablative facial deformities, congenital bowel and bladder deformities and orthopedic disorders.
- All missions to Russia were suspended in 2022.
- 10 surgical missions with teams of 6–22 members to Kigali, Rwanda to perform complex head and neck surgeries for major tumor ablations and reconstructions, burns and post-genocide scars as well as congenital deformities
- 4 missions of 5-9 members to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to treat congenital, traumatic and cancerous oromaxillofacial (OMFS) surgical conditions
- 5 missions of 10 members to Kathmandu, Nepal to treat patients with major burns, complex traumatic and congenital facial deformities, and upper extremity trauma
- 4 missions of 13-18 members to Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine to reconstruct complex head and surgical injuries in soldiers and civilians suffering from war trauma. Since 2023, more than 780 surgeons and 1080 nurses are being trained.
- Pilot missions of 2 surgeons to Guatemala (2), Peru, Mozambique, Dominican Republic, and Iraq
- 2024 – New mission sites are being explored in Ghana and Guyana.
- Through Global Outreach at the University of Toronto, Dr. Adamson also engages senior surgical residents and fellows to provide them a unique opportunity to join missions to stimulate their lifetime commitment to humanitarian work.
There have been 58 major missions involving the Foundation and Dr. Adamson since 1996. There have been more than 3,350 consultations, an estimated 4,050 medical procedures, and approximately 41,000 hours of volunteer time associated with these surgical missions.
On every mission but three, Dr. Adamson has acted as Chef de Mission and/or Mission Director and operated on all missions up until 2024, giving his personal time, financial support, energy and leadership to this humanitarian organization. He has also brought together leading Canadian, American and European surgeons, nurses and anesthesiologists to travel on these missions, all of whom are donating their time and expertise to care for patients and to teach.
Testimonials abound from Dr. Adamson’s colleagues and partners about his commitment to advance the specialty of facial plastic surgery and improve patient care around the world through his teaching and leadership, and to the substantial impact Face the Future Foundation has had building capacity and enhancing sustainability in global health by “Providing Hope. Transforming Lives ” for 28 years.
In 2016, Dr. Adamson was awarded the Order of Ontario (OOnt) to individuals “for outstanding qualities of excellence and achievement who have left a lasting legacy in the province, Canada and beyond, and whose contributions have shaped the province’s history and place in Canada.”
In 2023, Dr. Adamson was honored with the Teasdale-Corti Humanitarian Award by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) “to celebrate Canadian physicians who have gone beyond the accepted norms of routine practice, which may include exposure to personal risk.” It recognized his actions which “have exemplified altruism and integrity, courage and perseverance in the alleviation of human suffering.”
